No less an authority than Kelley Blue Book (KBB) agrees. Every year it gives its “5-Year Cost to Own Awards. ” In plain language they look at the data and determine the brands that will cost the least while delivering the best over time. This year, five Subaru models earned the designation from Kelley Blue Book:

Buyers need to consider more than just purchase price. When KBB evaluates vehicles for the 5-Year Cost to Own Awards it looks at the cost of insurance, maintenance, fuel and depreciation – the “true costs” of vehicle ownership. They project the costs out over five years and contrast it to the segment average. 

Not surprisingly, Subaru’s SUVs stacked up especially well, including the flagship three-row 2023 Ascent … but so did two other models:

The cost to own a Subaru Ascent will be $5,087 less than the average. In their review of the 2023 Subaru Ascent, KBB highlighted that the Ascent comes with standard all-wheel-drive and is a safety standout because of a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and Subaru’s outstanding standard tech features. This 2023 Subaru Ascent has three rows of seating and updated styling for this model year. 

Owning a 2023 Subaru Outback will cost $8,772 less than the average. In choosing it in the Midsize 2-Row Seat Segment, KBB cited the Outback’s standard AWD, as well as its spacious interior and good resale value. The 2023 Subaru BRZ has a jaw-dropping cost to own of $16,519 less than the average in its segment. KBB’s BRZ review emphasized that it’s fun, affordable and reliable, which is more than can be said for some much pricier sports cars. The 2023 Subaru Impreza is impressive in the Compact Car segment with a five-year cost to own of $1,936 less than the average. KBB’s Impreza review highlighted that the Impreza has a choice of hatchback or sedan, standard AWD and “keen pricing & robust resale values.” Over five years, the 2023 Subaru Forester will cost $3,635 less than the Compact SUV segment average. KBB’s Forester review called out competitive pricing, top safety scores and the roomy cabin.
