The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has teamed up with respected consumer watch organization Consumer Reports to research vehicle safety and put out their annual “Teen Driver Vehicle Recommendation List.” These are top safety watchdog organizations that really do their homework, so their recommendations are worth your consideration.

It’s no surprise that Subaru vehicles figured heavily in the IIHS’s and CR’s three categories –

Best Used Vehicles, Good Used Vehicles, and Best New Vehicles – based on these criteria:

Vehicle type/size: small, midsize and large cars, small and midsize SUVs, minivans and pickups Reliability: above-average as measured by Consumer Reports (4 or 5 out of 5) Emergency handling: standard automatic braking systems that earn an advanced or superior rating from the IIHS in its front crash prevention test Braking distance performance: 60 mph to stopped in 145 feet or less on dry pavement Overall safety ratings: IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating for new vehicles, and 4 or 5 stars overall from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Lowest trim level and for used vehicles, good condition, and typical mileage
